THE RUNAWAYS • Young And Fast LP

Allegiance Records 1985
It was safe to assume that this record would suck, but nothing could have prepared me for how utterly and hilariously bad it really is. In spite of 23 musicians and 5 different vocalists being credited, Young And Fast features none of the original RUNAWAYS, and was clearly an attempt, by the ever unscrupulous Kim Fowley, to cash in on the name and further defile the RUNAWAYS' legacy. The words to explain just how terrible this record is simply don't exist. To say that the lyrics sink sub-moronism to new lows and that the music and melodies are childish, superficial, and painfully bland is only scratching the surface. The songs range from hamfisted SUZI QUATRO-ish Glam Rock (sorry Suzi), to synthesized 60s girl group pap, to pseudo-urban electro pop and fuck knows what else. There is no question that this is THE worst record I've posted and possibly the worst record I've ever heard, and I strongly advise that you do not download it unless you've got an insatiably morbid curiosity or are in search of a good laugh.

I actually like this. But the fact that it's different people and Kim was just using this for money makes it feel strange for me.
Still some good songs anyways.

I cant understand the bad reviews of this album, if this had of been done by a band that wasn't named The Runaways it would get more credit..
Look it's obviously not as good as the original Runaways but it's a lot better than this review makes out.

Funny how you say Kim Fowely was "cashing in" on The Runaways name.....HE OWNED the name, thought of the concept and the first line up of girls executed HIS marketing genius. I am the lead vocalist on most of The Runaways "Young and Fast" album. Gilby Clarke from Guns n Roses played guitar on some of the tracks as well as Nigel Harrison from Blondie. It was a lot of fun and we all did it on purpose on a "spinal tap" level. For you to dismiss it so negatively says a lot about what you DON'T understand about the music business~

I understand the SPINAL TAP angle, but whereas SPINAL TAP had great songs that were funny, this record has neither the songs nor the laughs. To each his, or her as the case may be, own. Most people seem to have enjoyed this record, I did not.

Great opportunity to hear this thank you. Is there a way you can post each singer on the songs they sing. My IPOD has so much that if there are multiple vocalist in one band than I post the bands name and than in parenthesis I put the vocalist, for example;
The Runaways(Cherie Currie)
The Runaways(Joan Jett)
.... etc

I am enjoying the songs, they aren't the worse I've heard, but it is way to different from the original sound, fans of the original band were more likely pissed off that it was so different and there was a different line-up(back than only enthusiast really paid attention when it came to a voice change). Its cool you were apart of this and while the name of The Runaways was his wasn't this originally Joan Jett's idea to make an all girl rock group? Anyway, good vocals, if there are any plans to release new material under a new name please do let us know. Like another post says; you would have been given more credit and less harsh criticism if it were a different name.

I listened to the whole album after downloading and I must say it is very different from the original Runaways, so I'd have to say its unfair to compare, especially since they are in name only The Runaways, none of the original members are in there, Kim is the only link and he's just the record producer. When comparing old to new, you usually should have a stronger link than just name, for instance you can compare the Rob Halford era of Judas Priest to the Tim "Ripper" Owens era, cause the band Judas Priest itself is the same, the singer is the difference.

A good barometer to use sometimes is whether or not you can imagine it being fun to play/sing certain songs. I hear some songs on here I think would be fun to play. Therefore, I agree with those who said if this was a one off (which it really was) by a different name, some reviewers would be more understanding. Lastly, for the Fowley completists, of which I am one, this is an important piece of his late '80's discography.
Thanks for posting this album.

I'm a huge fan of the runaways, I have all their albums, and I must say, this album is nothing like the original Runaways, but I really enjoyed this album, I think it's really good. Thanks for the DL link.
