DESTRUCTION • Live At World War III LP

Old Thrash Records 2010
I couldn't resist buying this record even though I knew it was gonna blow. Who gives a shit though... it's DESTRUCTION at World War III! Hadta have it! The WWIII festival is one of those fabled shows that I'da given my left nut to see. In November 1985 not only DESTRUCTION, but VOIVOD, POSSESSED, CELTIC FROST, and NASTY SAVAGE all descended upon Montreal's Paladium for one of the best line-ups ever! Anyways, I kinda remember a videotape of this floating around, and I'm certain that said videotape is the source material for this boot. Of course it sounds like total ass, but it's cool as shit, and is infinitely better than the SODOM boot I posted way back. After a couple of songs the guitar becomes audible so at least you can decipher what the fuck is going on. If you don't download this, you know the punishment... death, death, DEATH!

Don't bother with their newest, "D.E.V.O.L.U.T.I.O.N.", it's easily their worst bag of post-thrash "we're still heavy even though our songwriting is gone" barfbag since back when Mike tried to carry on Destruction by himself. Those EP's were bad enough. I might download this, but I've got A SHIT TON of music to get through, like the entire Blind Guardian discography thus far. I have a weak spot for over-dubbed chorus vocals and Lord of The Rings.

The Antichrist, or maybe Metal Discharge, was the last new DESTRUCTION record I heard. It was just more of the same. This live record is not essential by any means.

Yeah, but at least this is live material taken from the era when the band was actually creative, instead of making the metal version of "We are the World", like they did on Inventor of Evil. Here's a link to a video of that garbage, just for laughs. It has all these metal vocalist guest-stars (like a typical hip-hop single with cameos): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tthikBss3BU

Sorry for the double-posting here, but there is no message system as far as I know for me to post this elsewhere. Anyway, I thought I might let you know that the Stators LP skips right at the first song at the 0:32 mark.

I agree with Zealot, when Destruction broke up (after Schmier left, anyway) I mourned their passing. When they came back in, what? 2000? with All Hell Breaks Loose I was in heaven, fantastic comeback album (err, CD) but each successive one has been fast worse than the last and after Metal Discharge I just gave up.

Still think their best work was Live Without Sense.

Thanks ZC. I missed that little skip on the STATORS record. That seems to happen when I'm ripping vinyl and one of those goddamn Microsoft system tray bubbles pops up. It causes a little glitch and for that spilt second no audio is recorded. Unfortunately it's gonna be a while before I can re-rip and upload.

Would love to get a hold of some other WWIII live material (Voivod, Frost, especially)... that fest occurred right about the time I discovered thrash/speed metal...

As for Destruction, I gave up with "Cracked Brain." I'll stick to the "Mad Butcher" EP and everything that came before it...

Cool. I can wait, because it is still playable other than that little second gap. By the way, I'm putting up some "archives" of more modern bands like Blind Guardian, Iced Earth, Nevermore, etc. because some of the n00bs in my forum requested it, so it's there if you want it too. So far it's just the just the Nevermore.

Hey Atomizer. I've got an old cassette of Celtic Frost at the Concert Hall in Toronto circa '86 or '87 when they played with Voivod and Slaughter. That was my first Metal show, and what a way to get started!!! I was gonna post it a while back, but thought it sounded too crappy - maybe I'll post it anyway.

"Celtic Frost at the Concert Hall in Toronto..." Yes, please post it! Would love to hear it.

Dude, you don't know how much of a cornball I am for Celtic Frost.. I even like Cold Lake.... Yes, I just said that. I even have all those old barely-listenable Hellhammer demos they re-issued onto CD!! However, I look at the upcoming Triptykon band lead by T.G. Warrior with suspicion remembering how hard Apollyon Sun sucked...

Fellow Cold Lake fan here, and yes, Apollyon Sun and The new stuff blows, sad really, but if you read "Are You Morbid?" by Mr. Warrior, you will understand why CF can no longer be.

Track 2 on this one is corrupt. I just now tried to unpack it.. and can't I downloaded it more than once to be sure, and it is.

not to go off topic, but I have a question:
The background picture on ARGTHN is kick-ass. The bass player looks like he's having a blast!
Who is it? And can you post the whole picture? I'd love to use it as a wallpaper!

Alcolm X said...

Hey Michael. Not completely off topic, that's Blacky from VOIVOD (who played with DESTRUCTION at WW3). I'll see if I can find the original.

Alcolm X said...

This has been re-upped and it now unpacks A-OK.

schweet Mediafire likes corrupting my files too for some reason. It did it Nevermore album I upped for the forum. Since my member count is small, not everything gets downloaded right away, or nobody tells me, so I may have more not working properly for all I know. Well, it is free, so I shouldn't complain about their service.

Thanks, Alcolm X. I thought it was him (t-shirt should have been a dead giveaway).
Yeah, if you could post the original photo, that would be great. If not, that's cool, too.
Just love the image - Blacky freaking SMILING while blasting pure metal. Just awesome.
By the way, excellent site you have here. :D
